We are excited to announce Cochrane Rehabilitation's participation in the upcoming Global Evidence Summit 2024, scheduled from September 10th to 13th at the O2 Universum in Prague, Czech Republic. The event starts with pre-summit meetings on Monday, September 9th, setting the stage for a significant gathering focused on evidence-based practice.
Cochrane Rehabilitation will contribute a diverse range of presentations at this year's summit, featuring five short orals and four poster presentations from our members:
Short Orals:
- Stefano Negrini will present "Opening the rehabilitation 'black box' to improve reporting and evidence synthesis. The Guideline for Intervention Description in Rehabilitation (GUIDE-Rehab)." Negrini notes, "Cochrane Rehabilitation worked hard with global stakeholders to develop a reporting guideline to open the black box of rehabilitation interventions (i.e., fully understanding the treatment provided). We expect that GUIDE-Rehab will be a major advancement in the field when published and implemented, in research as well as in clinical practice."
- Carlotte Kiekens will discuss "The World Health Assembly 2023 resolution calls all stakeholders to prioritize Health Policy and Systems Research in rehabilitation." The WHA resolution on "Strengthening rehabilitation in Health Systems" urges member States to "promote high-quality rehabilitation research, including health policy and systems research", with the support of organisations in "collecting health policy and system research (HPSR) to ensure future evidence-based rehabilitation policies and practices". Therefore, Cochrane Rehabilitation started a project to perform four overviews of systematic reviews. The objective is to synthesize the available evidence about the effect of delivery, financial and governance arrangements, and implementation strategies in rehabilitation. In the meantime, we will develop methodological guidance for rehabilitation HPSR.
- Stefano Negrini will also present "One size does not fit all – investigating complex interventions when RCTs are not feasible. Experiences from the rehabilitation field." He emphasizes, "Cochrane Rehabilitation developed the rehabilitation definition for research purposes with 80 global stakeholders representing the major Scientific Societies and journals. A major consequence is the understanding that rehabilitation is a complex intervention. This explains the well-known difficulties in research and the need to change paradigm to allow 'strengthening rehabilitation in health systems' as required by the World Health Assembly."
- Chiara Arienti will share insights on "Mapping Synthesis of Overviews of Cochrane Systematic Reviews as an evidence implementation tool for clinicians." Arienti states, "Mapping synthesis is a valuable tool for clinicians, providing a clear overview of rehabilitation interventions. By combining effect estimation and certainty of evidence using a graphical output, it simplifies decision-making and enhances patient involvement, ensuring more informed and effective treatment choices."
- Stefano Giuseppe Lazzarini will present "Appropriate use of the label 'systematic review' according to a novel definition in a sample of recently published papers."
Posters:
- Francesca Gimigliano will present "An ebook as an implementation tool for clinicians: the Cochrane Rehabilitation experience with overviews of Cochrane reviews."
- Chiara Arienti will present "The influence of bias in randomised controlled trials on rehabilitation intervention effect estimates: what we have learned from meta-epidemiological studies." She remarks, "Understanding how biases in RCTs affect rehabilitation intervention outcomes is crucial. Our meta-epidemiological analysis highlights the need for rigorous methodology to ensure accurate effect estimates, ultimately enhancing clinical decision-making and patient care in rehabilitation."
- Jessica Wong will introduce "Introduction to Target Trial Emulation in Rehabilitation: A Systematic Approach to Emulate a Randomized Controlled Trial Using Observational Data." Wong expresses, "We are excited to present our methodological paper on Target Trial Emulation applied to rehabilitation at the Global Evidence Summit this September in Prague. Target Trial Emulation guides the design of observational studies to estimate the causal effects of rehabilitation. We are strengthening methodological approaches to estimating causal effects of rehabilitation when RCTs cannot be conducted for more robust evidence production."
- Heather Shearer will present "Development of an IDEAL-Rehab Framework to Guide Study Design and Conduct Evaluations of Rehabilitation Interventions."
Additionally, Carlotte Kiekens will participate in a workshop submitted by Jorien Laermans from Cochrane First Aid. This collaborative effort, involving Cochrane Pre-hospital and Emergency Care, Cochrane Nutrition, Cochrane Germany, the Campbell Collaboration, the Joanna Briggs Institute, and eBASE Africa, is titled "Toolbox for effective evidence dissemination: a hands-on workshop."
The Global Evidence Summit serves as a platform for advancing evidence-based practice and fostering collaboration among stakeholders worldwide. We are honored to be part of all this and look forward to sharing our insights and work with the global community.
