Philippine Academy of Rehabilitation Medicine

The Philippine Academy of Rehabilitation Medicine (PARM) is a nationally recognized and globally accepted society of dynamic, compassionate, and highly competent Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine specialists (Physiatrists) at the forefront of comprehensive healthcare of the Filipino people. Founded in 1974, the academy is composed of around 500 medical specialists in Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine in the Philippines. Its mission is to promote and advance the field of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine, as well as to elevate the standards of practice through assistance in residency, fellowship and leadership trainings, continuing medical education, research, and service, thereby improving the quality of life of the Filipino people.

PARM is an active member of the International Society of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (ISPRM); an active member of the Asia-Oceanian Society of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (AOSPRM), Specialty Society of the Philippine Medical Association (PMA); and the 2015 Apolinario Mabini awardee for Rehabilitation Volunteer of the Year. The society exemplifies the values of Professional excellence, Advocacy, Research, and Member wellness.

The academy showcases the medical specialty through a distinctive clinical practice of the profession that aims to enhance, restore, optimize, and prevent loss of functional ability and quality of life for those with physical impairments and disabilities. Physiatry in the Philippines encompasses realms of NeuroMedicine and Robotics, Musculoskeletal Medicine, Sports and Performing Arts Medicine, Critical Care Medicine, Pain Medicine, and Interventional and Regenerative Medicine. The accredited residency training institutions include Ospital ng Makati, Philippine General Hospital, Philippine Orthopedic Center, St. Luke’s Medical Center, University of Santo Tomas Hospital, and Veterans Memorial Medical Center.

To champion advocacy, PARM celebrated its first National Physiatry Day through a virtual international program on July 17, 2021, attended by local and global physiatrists, allied health professionals, government and non-government organizations, disability groups, and patients. The Honorable President Rodrigo Roa Duterte of the Republic of the Philippines on September 10, 2020, signed Presidential Proclamation 1017, which declares every 17th of July as National Physiatry Day. This is in coordination with the Department of Health, through Dr. Francisco Duque III. The program objectives include: 1) to fortify Rehabilitation Medicine as a distinctive medical specialty in terms of education, training, practice, service, and research; 2) to create awareness of Physiatry across the archipelago from the national grass roots to the global arenas; 3) to highlight the significance and impact of Rehabilitation Medicine/Physiatry in optimizing function and quality of life and overcoming physical impairments and disabilities of patients; and 4) to honor the contribution of Rehabilitation Medicine/Physiatry as a medical specialty and the corresponding physiatrists to the nation and to the world.

For research, PARM conducts research workshops through the Write Right program and Research Fora featuring oral presentations of original articles, case reports, and poster presentations of all types of scientific studies. Furthermore, these scholarly articles are published in the official journal of the academy, PARM Proceedings. Pioneering member wellness, the society responds to members through the Member Wellness Committee, COVID-19 Committee, and Telerehabilitation Committee.
