The Royal Belgian Society of Physical & Rehabilitation Medicine (RBSPRM) is the official nationally recognized society of Physical & Rehabilitation Medicine specialists in Belgium. Founded in 1910, the RBSPRM is the oldest society in Europe. The PRM section of the European Union of Medical Specialists (UEMS) and the European Federation of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (EFPMR), which evolved into the European Society of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (ESPRM), was also born in Belgium in 1957 and 1963 respectively.
The RBSPRM is an active member of the International Society of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (ISPRM). Several board members are members of the European Academy of Rehabilitation Medicine (EARM), the European Society of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (ESPRM), and the European Union of Medical Specialists PRM section (UEMS-PRM section). The Society also actively contributes to the annual European Board trainees’ examination. The Board is composed of academic specialists who represent the seven national universities. The RBSPRM has 570 members. Our members are both from the northern – Dutch-speaking – part and the southern – French-speaking – part of the country. As a result, the language of communication within the society is English. Each year, the society organizes its national congress, usually in December. The Society also organized joint congresses in partnership with the Dutch (NSRM) and French (SOFMER) societies.
The mission of the RBSPRM is to promote education and research in the different fields (sports medicine, neurorehabilitation, low back pain and musculoskeletal disease, vascular and pulmonary conditions, pediatric rehabilitation, etc.) of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine according to the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) framework of the World Health Organization.
